Lessons

Mr. Chin enjoys teaching beginners, teachers, and everything in between. He feels that the continual challenge to adapt to each student's needs helps keep him well-grounded and practical in his approach to teaching.

David takes special care with his beginning students to ensure that they develop strong foundational skills and understanding of concepts that are appropriate to their age and level. He helps foster ownership over individual learning by selecting repertoire in consultation with each student as they develop. David further challenges students to broaden their musical appreciation while building sound technique so that they may become well-rounded students of music.

Lessons are Tailored to Each Individual  to deal efficiently with both strengths and weaknesses and proceed at a rate offering reasonable challenge. Students progress to longer lessons when able to absorb more detail.

  • Beginner: 30 min

  • Intermediate: 45 min

  • Advanced: 60 min

Recitals are held in February and June. All students are encouraged to participate.

Exams (RCM or Canadian Conservatory) and Festivals are encouraged to provide students more opportunities in which to present their music for others to hear. Public presentation is not for everyone. Those students wishing not to take part in exams or festivals will be encouraged in other appropriate ways.

Theory and Ear Training may be included during regular lessons or may require extra lessons depending on students' needs and exam requirements where applicable.

History and Harmony require separate lessons. In general, students benefit from extra lessons when preparing for exams.

Summer Lessons are encouraged for all students to do any of the following:

  • Learn Fun Repertoire

  • Reach Ahead

  • Learn Theory, History or Harmony

  • Prepare for an Exam

Lessons are given weekly,  as regular practice is required to build good habits. All students must have regular access to an instrument. Appropriate practicing methods and frequency will be discussed with each student.
